Here Are Some Highlights
Sprouted-grain breads made from an array of grains and legumes can provide a complete set of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins (Good for vegetarians/vegans).Whole-wheat (whole grain wheat) bread is made by grinding wheat kernels -- comprised of a vitamin-rich germ, a protein- and carbohydrate-dense endosperm and an outer shell called the bran -- into whole-wheat flour.
Sprouted-grain breads are made from wheat kernels (often called wheat berries) that are allowed to sprout and then ground up and baked into bread. Because the kernels are not ground into flour, such breads are often referred to as "flourless." (Sprouted-grain breads do, however, contain gluten -- so they are no easier to metabolize for people who are unable to digest this wheat protein.)

(Sprouted-grain breads do, however, contain gluten -- so they are no easier to metabolize for people who are unable to digest this wheat protein.)
Sprouting also causes some trace minerals, such as zinc, to be "freed up," or released, from the bran of the wheat kernel.
Sprouted-grain products have distinct nutritional advantages over white breads, but when compared to other whole-grain breads, they're usually nutritionally comparable -- although nutrient contents can vary, depending on the sprouts included. On the whole, the types and amounts of nutrients -- such as calcium, iron, niacin and fiber -- in sprouted-grain breads are often comparable to what's found in whole-grain breads.

On the other hand, resources such as "Food For Life", who manufactures and sells sprouted grain products, make plenty of claims that sprouted grains are better for reasons such as; more easily digested protein and grain, and sprouting neutralizes phytic acid (phytic acid decreased the absorption of many important minerals).
Bottom Line: You may prefer the nuttier flavor of the sprouted grain breads/products, or you may find that your body does react to these grains in a more positive way, but unless you are a vegetarian or vegan they may not be providing any more benefits than regular whole grain breads/products. This is important to keep in mind since these products are often much more expensive than non-sprouted varieties of whole grains.

I didn't like how all the temptations were sweets. Why no salty food? I know this is sort of a petty complaint, but come on, who isn't tempted by a handful of fries or greasy chips?!
The exercise tip Jillian gave, which I couldn't figure out the name of (Dead Lifts??), seemed like it could easily get someone hurt if they did not know what they were doing. Think about all the back problems that could result from that...yikes.
I found it interesting that Jillian has a good friend who is suffering, or who suffered, from cancer and now Jillian is a huge cancer advocate. That's fine, good for her, but sponsoring and selling a detox product may not be so great for cancer prevention Jillian. I'm pretty sure cancer prevention, and even treatment, is all about natural and holistic diets and remedies.
I didn't like how Moh said the "show" saved his life. That gives off the wrong message because then people will think they can't do it on their own. I'm just thinking about the people who are truly obsessed with the show and want to be on it SO bad. They will assume they can't do it on their own. Anyone else agree?

Apparently I really like Bob, because my first two "likes" refer to him. I loved his exercise advice regarding push-ups. He said if you can't do the "real" push-ups, to them against the wall or even go lower and use a chair. I do that :) He added to his advice by saying you should do some at each commercial break. Awesome idea!
Bob said he hated it when people complain when they lose weight (like Rudy, who lost 8 pounds). Obviously he was complaining because he was used to seeing a bigger number, but come on, 8 pounds is 8 pounds! That's awesome. When you complain about losing 8 pounds how does that make others feel who only lose 3 or 4? I go through this same issue where I work. People lose 3 pounds in a week and get pissed because it wasn't the 8 pounds they lost the week before. Come on people! Anything is better than 0, or gaining!
It made me happy to see Moh giving kids nutrition advice at the end. Good for him.

Question: Would you like to add anything to my like and dislikes? Comments? Other opinions?
Today is Thursday and I am going to be busy busy busy. For starters, I need to start packing for Colorado (I don't have much time to pack tomorrow and I'm leaving Saturday!). After a bit of packing I have to go to work on some weight management handouts, then tonight is our monthly Columbus Dietetic Association meeting! Today's topic is "body assessments" and we get to see a Bod Pod and Under-Water Weighing!
Have a great day, and thanks for reading :)

Great info on sprouted grains! I love sprouted bread. I like that it's at least a little bit less processed than regular whole wheat bread but most of all I have really grown to love that nutty flavor. Yum!
Good luck with your busy, busy, busy day!! :D
OMG I thought the EXACT same thing about Jillian's deadlift tip! Deadlifts are actually one of MY favorite exercises, but they are rarely done properly. I was thinking of all the ppl that were going to throw out their back!
OOH so jealous you are traveling.. how fun!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ezekial tortillas. I enjoy the nuttier flavor. They are not good for wraps though because they are a bit stiff.
I dont watch Biggest Loser.. I need to tune in, Bob is cute :)
I have just discovered sprouted grains. I find that they are easier to digest but that is just me. I agree with you and Bob, I hate when people complain about 'only' losing 3 or 4 pounds in a week. Seriously, losing any number is a success.
I haven't tried sprouted grains yet but you've peaked my curiosity! :) my favorite hodge podge is a big salad with chips and salsa mixed in for extra crunch and flavor!
sometimes I buy sprouted bread because of their nutty flavor and crunchier consistency. Thanks for letting us to know that they're not more nutritious than WW bread.... you know.... they sell it as it has more nutrition which is misleading. Once again... so glad that we have you to do the inspection on these claims! :D
have a nice day~~~
I haven't tried sprouted products although I have thought about it. I use all 100% whole wheat bread currently but it sounds like I could throw some sprouted ones into the mix.
As far as BL I agree with your likes and dislikes. That Dead Lift tip from Jillian was worrisome to me as well for people and their backs. And Bob's tip on push ups was great...is so how I worked up to doing standard push ups. My biggest dislike about the show is the game play that is part of it. The Tracy stuff lately has been just too much. I also get a bit sad when I see contestants getting down on themselves when they don't loose as much as they were hoping. Seriously any loss is a win in my book when you are working towards a healthy weight. I liked seeing how certain players have been supporting each other regardless if they are now on the other team. Liz giving Danny her video win and surprising him with it made me a bit teary. And Shay pulling that high number when the pressure on was good to see cause I'm sure that helped her self-esteem which in my opinion is one of the biggest things that those on this show need to be developing.
Thank you for the great info about sprouted grain breads! I've often wondered if they were truly "better" than regular whole wheat bread - thank you for the answer! :-) I do love Trader Joe's spouted grain bread for the great flavor and texture - so yummy!
Mmmm, your "hodge-podge" lunches look SO delicious!!! I love leftover roasted green beans with brown rice and cottage cheese all mixed up together - lunches in one bowl are the best! :-)
Hooray for your upcoming research presentation!!! I'm SO excited for you!
I thought the same thing about Jillians tip. I can totally see someone who doesn't know the proper technique hurting themself.
I was sad to see Mo go, but I'm glad he is doing well at home!
I get so annoyed when they complain about only losing 8 pounds! I am thrilled to death if I lose even 1/2 of a pound let alone 8!
Thanks for the info on sprouted grains... I never tried them but have wanted to =)
I did not watch BL yet so once again I had to skip that section on your post ha
Ugh I'm SO behind on Biggest Loser...MUST catch up! BUT I do looove deadlifts, I think they're a great exercise and I'm not sure how she talked about them but I could see A LOT of people hurting themselves over not doing them properly. I think I even hurt my back once by doing them WAY too fast and not staying in proper form! :(
I didn't see this, so I don't know what Jillian said about deadlifts, but they are a great exercise...and you're totally right, very easy to injure yourself if you don't do them correctly.
I actually started eating sprouted grain bread from the constant recommendations on the Oxygen website (which is a women's weight lifting website). I think the idea is that it is "cleaner" or less processed, or something.
Now, I like it more, although I rarely eat bread at all.
Ah! I had to close my eyes again for your BL review haha I have to wait for the weekend to watch.
BUT I do love your cottage cheese on your salad. I'm ALL about the mixes in a bowl like cottage cheese and broccoli slaw or just big giant egg creations in a bowl that look nasty but taste oh so good
I enjoy Ezekial bread from Food For life. I think it has more flavor than regular bread and less calories. I can't see eating a slice of bread that's 120-200 calories. If you use two slice, it can be almost 400 calories just in the bread! I'd rather use those calories for my sandwich fillings :)
I don't watch the Biggest Loser, but I love doing deadlifts!
Hey Lady!! I'll be out of town from now until Monday so if I don't get to tell you.... have fun this weekend! OK.... onto my comments:
Interesting facts about the sprouted bread- I always try to eat it because I thought it was a lot better for me. I'm vegetarian so I guess it is a little better for me.... but now I won't feel bad if I eat regular ww bread.... Still no white bread for me though! Don't worry!
I love your hodge podge lunch. I love mixing random stuff..... and hot sauce and salsa ALWAYS make everything taste good! Also, the sauteed mushrooms you made look so hearty and delicious!
BL: As for the temptations- they often have chips, pizza and other non-sweet foods in temptations. Not sure if there were any in any uncovered plates on that challenge but remember, Tracey won so quickly some people didn't even get to play.
Dead lifts are a very common weight lifting technique when using free weights, but you're right.... it should have been explained a little better because people who don't know how to properly do them could get hurt.
Moe said the show saved his life.... I never thought about it but I hope people don't actually get discouraged by that. I also loved how he was running with the kids and giving nutrition advice at the end!!
I can't wait to hear about the bod pod you are going to see!! I'm in love with my polar heart rate monitor.... from what I know about the bod pod it sounds like a totally rad suped up version of what I have. Do tell once you see it!!!

I haven't seen the BL yet, but maybe I'll catch a bit of it online...
Great info on sprouted grain products. I love sprouted grain breads. I think they have more flavor.
Your hodge podge lunch looks great! I think (almost) anything topped with salsa is great! :)
I like sprouted grain products from Trader Joe's because they taste more grainy and more substantial- I wasn't aware of the differences though, and that was a great resource!
My favorite lunch hodge podge is salad topped with fruits and I love dipping it in hummus.
I am about 2 weeks behind on BL but I agree that any weight lost should be congratulated- normal people don't lose 15 pounds in a week on a weekly basis. I think that is one of the problems with the show- there are no instant results in real life.
I haven't watched TBL yet so I skipped that part of your post :-) But I eat both sprouted and "regular" whole-grain bread. I heard that sprouted grain bread was less processed, so in trying to eat as much "whole" foods as possible, I thought it was a good choice. This research is interesting, though, and I kinda figured as much. I don't eat that much bread though so one loaf lasts me a LONG time in the freezer.
I really like sprouted bread because I like biting into the grains and seeds yum! They are so much better than the 45 calorie tiny diet bread I used to buy!
oh you reminded me about my exercise physilogy lab in college , we all had to be underwater weighed...it was an experience to say the least LOL
i LOVE ezekial bread! I love the nutty, grainy texture that it ias and that it doesnt get all doughy and flattened when I make a sandwich, that you can often see with soft whole wheat bread. They are pretty low calorie for a slice too! (i think 70 or 80 calories)
Biggest loser- i have a love/hate relationship with this show as well. You had some great likes and dislikes. I do not liek how Jillian shows the tips real quick and then leaves people on their own devices, proper form is SO KEY when you are starting an exercise program and I am afraid so many people will go out and try this just remember what her positioning looked like on TV!
i also never did think about how when Moe said that the show saved his life as if he couldn't do it on his own, and makes others think this way! GREAT POINT!!
your hodge podge looks fabulous!!
I really like your inventive way of using POM juice in the meat, but I normally will drink it straight up since I don't buy it in bulk.
And my hodge podge meal usually looks similar to your first one with the veggie burger, 2 cheeses, etc... we have similar tastes!
I do not go out of my way to eat sprouted bread, especially since I can't get it here anyway, but I have had it before. Usually this is something I get when at a vegan/raw restaurant. Not bad, but yes it is pricey. In the end, I stock the house with whole grain bread. I just bought a bread machine so I am looking forward to playing with that. Thanks for the review on the grains. Wish I could watch Biggest Loser.
Thanks for this post! I was curious about sprouted breads.
Love the post! Great info. as always!!
Also always love your Biggest Loser reviews!!
Have a great time at FNCE!!

Hello
i am wondering if you would know of any online websites, or something.. for online guides to vegans.. vegetarians, and someone who is just trying to get their life and health back on track?
I love sprouted bread!! I like the taste a lot, and I really like that they are less processed than other breads. Sometimes even whole wheat bread has HFCS and a bunch of other scary ingredients... But they are a lot more expensive, so I don't buy them every time.
No thanks to more product placement. I love Bob and Jillian is finding her way into my heart again. I eat Ezekiel bread because I like the taste and the nutritionals. Sometimes I want a soft bread, so I go with whole wheat instead. But, I do eat a vegetarian diet for the most part so the sprouted breads may be helpful?
All this talk of bread makes me long for gluten. I do love those hearty breads with nuts and seeds. Mmmm!
Have a great weekend in Colorado. Sounds very exciting!
Thanks for that info on the sprouted grains! I just made the switch of becoming a vegetarian, and that's very useful info :) Love your blog, btw~
Interesting re: sprouted grains! I always just "assumed" they must be superior, but good to know that may not always be the case. Haven't bought any sprouted bread myself, but on the other hand the info re: enzymes being more available via sprouting does make sense to me, so I've always meant to try it out. I think the bottom line is that I just don't have much use for bread, sprouted or not! I never think to use it!
I think that most of these contestants face is they think they CAN'T do it without BL. Well guess who's doing all the work on the show - you!
I wish they did a real life Biggest Loser - by that I mean showing someone trying to lose weight, while maintaining a full time job, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, bill paying, etc.
If my only "job" was to work out and eat well, I'd be at my goal weight by now! :D
Have a great weekend Gina - loved the recap!
Thank you for the info on sprouted grains. I had never heard of them before I read Paige's blog and her link to your blog. Thank you both!
