I decided to try Chobani Greek yogurt, since I've never tried it before.
This is another product I've seen many bloggers rave about. I've been partial to the Stoneyfield Oikos Greek yogurt, but this was on sale so I figured I'd give it a try. Compared to the Oikos, this tasted basically the same. Upon looking at the label, I noticed this was a 6 ounce container, whereas the Oikos containers are 5.3 ounces. Other than that, they were the exact same product! I'm glad I finally got to taste the Chobani, even if it was the same :) My only problem with the Greek yogurts is that they don't provide any Vitamin D. I think soon all yogurts will be fortified with Vitamin D (more on that to come in a post soon).Of course, I also purchased some Oikos, since I had one more free coupon left! They really taste the same, so if you are at the store and one is cheaper, buy it.

Meat Alternatives; Are They Better For Me?
The American Dietetic Association publishes their ADA Times about every other month, which is filled with nutrition updates and other fun food and nutrition information. The last ADA Times I received had an entire section devoted to veggie burgers and hot dogs. I figured since many of you are vegetarian, or vegan, or just enjoy veggie products for their health benefits, I would share some of the information that was provided.
Nutritional Advantages of Veggie Burgers:
- 3 times less total fat and 7 times less saturated fat than the average beef burger or turkey burger.
- Usually contain 3-4 grams of fiber, compared to zero in real meat products.
- Some (not all) veggie burgers contain many types of healthy, antioxidant-rich vegetables, and soy, compared to zero veggies and soy in real meat products.
- Veggie burgers typically contain 2 times less protein than beef or turkey burgers, with the average protein amount being around 11 grams (choose veggie burgers with soy protein and/or wheat gluten if you think you need more protein)
** Keep in mind, these comparisons are made against typical burgers, which are 80% lean and 20% fat meat. This (below) is a burger made with Laura's Lean ground beef, which has much less fat than typical burgers (usually 6% fat and 94% lean), contains 7 grams protein per ounce, and is low in sodium. There are also companies that make lean/very lean ground turkey.

** Veggie hot dogs only have advantages, because on average they have fewer calories, less fat, less sodium, and more protein than their beef counterparts. However, if you're like me you eat the turkey hot dogs, which are a much better alternative than beef!

Nutritional Disadvantages:

Question: What is your favorite "meatless meat alternative"? Personally I do not eat veggie burgers very often, but when I do I really enjoy Morning Star's Black Bean Burger. I also love Morning Star's Chik Nuggets! I fed then to Nick once and he had no idea (I'm so mean!). The Gardenburger products, which is pictured above, are also very good in my opinion.
So what is my plan for the day? After I finish reading blogs and enjoying my delicious cereal, I am working out, relaxing outside with my book, then running some errands. This afternoon I am enjoying happy hour with a good friend from school!
Thanks for reading, and have a great day.

What a fantastic post! Beef is the only meat I don't eat due to religious reasons, and it's hard to sometimes find a burger that isn't made of beef at BBQ's. I've found so many veggie patties to be dry, but I really like Chili's black bean burgers! I think meat patties have always had such a bad rap, but like you said, they can definitely be awesome for you too! I have still yet to find a juicy meatless burger!!
Sounds like you have a fun day ahead of you! :)
I like veggie burgers, and I'm actually experimenting with making my own right now...
Thanks for the break down. I really like Dr. Praeger's veggie burgers. They are definitely "veggie" burgers. I don't care as much for the ones that pretend to be real burgers.
I probably eat too many meat alternatives. I know they aren't the best for you, but for some reason I just really enjoy them. I particularly love the morningstar chipotle black bean burgers..a little spicy and very delicious! I also love the morningstar sausage patties...only 80 calories and they honestly taste like real sausage. Lastly, I love the morningstar chicken patties...they taste like fried chicken!!!
Great informative posts about vegetarian alternatives for burgers and hotdogs. I didn't know that veg burgers are so high in sodiums.
I don't personally consume much of these because I like simpler eats, but really useful for someone who consume it because they thought they are superior to the meat counterparts in all aspects.
Enjoy your monday~ :D
Definitely pays to read labels when it comes to meat alternatives. Products vary SO much- I was looking at veggie burgers the other day and the difference was HUGE...there were bean burgers, nut burgers, soy burgers, etc. All providing different nutrients and pros and cons to all, but it can get complicated when doing comparisons. I love the Original gardenburgers (I don't eat them because they have hardly any protein so don't work for me as a 'meat alternative') but the Amy's burgers are great :D
When I read your comment about the book, I read a whole chapter this morning, and feel SO much better! Thanks!
So, my favorite is to make my own BB, and then I love Tj's meatless meatballs, and TVP...
I don't eat meat either, so this was a great post, as there are so many alternatives out there that it can get a bit crazy.
I also watch the sodium content and like to have some protein for "staying" power, so I go with Amy's. I don't much care for soy burgers--as I like the grainy, veggie-ness (?) of veggie burgers and sometimes feel like the soy is too "fake."
If I don't really want to eat a burger, why would I want to eat something that's pretending to be one? However, if you eat meat, I can see the appeal :)
Yay, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who likes to go to the grocery multiple times a week! :-) I actually think I shop more economically that way, because then I always know I'm getting just what we need... (with a few fun purchases on every trip, of course :-)
Thank you so much for the great list of burger/dog comparisons! SO interesting and informative! We eat both veggie burgers and turkey burgers, and it's so interesting to discover the pros and cons of each one! (Omg, I gave Zach the Morningstar farms chicken nuggets without telling him they were veggie too! He couldn't tell the difference either! *giggles* ;-)
I am a vegetarian and have been for years. The commissary here has some products from morning star and there is usually tofu, so I have some options, but not many. I did decide to order a case, yes a full case, of the morning star farms black bean burgers and chicken nuggets. Other than having too many of them, I like the black bean burger as an option versus always having a soy patty. My favorite meatless alternative are the chicken bits by Quorn. If you haven't already heard of this, it is a mycoprotein and delicious. We use it anywhere you might add chicken. One of my faves is homemade pizza with garlic, artichokes, and quorn chicken.
I love love love dr. praeger's veggie burgers. They are mostly veggies and they taste yummy!
My husband really likes his meat, ha, so we typically don't have meatless meals because it's just easier that way. But for meat we usually stick to chicken breasts, ground turkey and fish.
Your day sounds fabulous!! I hope you have enjoyed it : )
Great post!!
I don't use a lot of meat alternatives - I prefer other sources of protein like greek yogurt, eggs, nut butters, or lean meats and seafood - but, my favorite is Boca Burgers- I think they tast hte most like the real thing!
I like the taste of Boca brand Chick'n Strips a lot but, the best ingredient list I found was Sunshine Burgers. As far as veggie dogs. Snuffy goes through a pack of Light Life dogs almost every week!
I like Morningstar's Spicy bean veg burger and their garden burger. Normally though, if I want a veggie burger I'll make them myself with what I have on hand!
Interesting info about meat alternatives. My fave = Boca Burgers. Hope you enjoyed your relaxing day! The internship is stressing me out a bit. We're having a biochem exam this Friday, and I'm struggling to remember and cram everything from 762-763 back into my brain!
I love turkey dogs too! Applegate Farms is my favorite. And for meatless, I think Gimmelean has the best flavor, but since going gluten-free, I can't eat them anymore. Do you know of any gluten-free veggie burgers?
my favorite is amy's california burger...so good!
Interesting and good food for thought.
I tried a variety of the American veggie alternatives and have no real affinity towards any one brand or dish. However, I do ocassionally snack on veggie bites such as chickenless or spinach nuggets. For burgers, I prefer to make my own black bean or portabella ones.
I love the Morningstar Farms Chik'n nuggets and the Quorn ones too!
I don't buy veggie burgers very often- my mom buys the boca ones for me and they are just ok-I prefer my homemade version! I don't think I've ever tried a fake hot dog...
Great Post! Amy's would win the veggie burger competition! lol Love her stuff! I like BEANS as my alternative! Much more natural...although, veggie burgers are great too!
